Jorge Martínez de Hoyos

Jorge Martínez de Hoyos (born September 25, 1920 in Mexico City, Mexico) was a prolific Mexican actor whose career spanned more than five decades, beginning in the late 1940s and continuing unabated until his death in 1997. His versatile screen presence allowed him to move fluidly between Mexican cinema and Hollywood productions, earning him roles in iconic films such as The Magnificent Seven (1960) where he portrayed the loyal townsman Hilario, and the Mexican classic Viento negro (1965) in which he delivered a memorable performance as Ulalio. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he appeared in a wide variety of genres, from westerns like Montana Territory (1952) to dramatic melodramas such as La sonrisa de la Virgen (1958), often providing the nuanced supporting characters that enriched the narrative fabric of each production. In addition to his film work, Martínez de Hoyos was a respected television actor, contributing to popular series including El pecado de Oyuki (1988) and the acclaimed mini‑series Lonesome Dove (1989). His collaborations with renowned directors such as Luis Buñuel (Cronos, 1993) showcased his ability to adapt to avant‑garde storytelling, while his recurring voice‑over work in the mid‑1985 demonstrated his distinctive vocal talent. Off‑screen, he married fellow actress Alicia Caro in 1965 after meeting on the set of Cien gritos de terror; the couple remained together for 32 years until his death from lung cancer on May 6, 1997.
