John Michael Higgins

John Michael Higgins is an American actor, comedian, and game‑show host whose career spans over three decades, showcasing a remarkable versatility across film, television, stage, and voice work. Born on February 12, 1963, in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated from Amherst College in 1985 where he honed his musical talent as a member of the a cappella group the Zumbyes, an experience that later informed his intricate vocal arrangements for Christopher Guest’s mockumentary A Mighty Wind. Higgins first broke into professional performance as a theatre instructor with Street 70 in Maryland, then moved to Broadway with a 1991 appearance in La Bête and off‑Broadway roles such as Edward Albee’s Tiny Alice. He quickly became a fixture in television, delivering memorable recurring characters on series like Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, and Seinfeld, while also portraying attorney Wayne Jarvis on Arrested Development and the flamboyant David Letterman in HBO’s The Late Shift.

Beyond on‑screen acting, Higgins has cultivated a thriving voice‑acting career, lending his distinctive timbre to characters such as Iknik Blackstone Varrick in The Legend of Korra, Bob Wheeler on Bob’s Burgers, and the enthusiastic announcer role in the Pitch Perfect trilogy. His comedic timing and musical acumen earned him awards for best vocal performance and ensemble work. From 2018 to 2022 he hosted the daytime game show America Says, garnering a Daytime Emmy nomination, and in 2023 he returned to the game‑show arena as host and executive producer of Split Second. Married to actress and writer Margaret Welsh since 2003, the couple shares two children, a daughter and a son, and continues to balance thriving careers with family life.
