John Belushi

John Adam Belushi (January 24, 1949 – March 5, 1982) was an American comedian, actor, singer, and musician whose meteoric rise in the 1970s reshaped American comedy. Born in Chicago to Albanian‑American parents, he grew up in the Chicago suburb of Wheaton where he attended Wheaton Central High School and later the College of DuPage before briefly enrolling at the University of Wisconsin‑Whitewater. His early forays into entertainment included forming the high‑school band the Ravens and co‑founding the West Compass Trio, an improvisational troupe that caught the eye of Bernard Sahlins, the founder of The Second City. At Second City Belushi met future collaborators like Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Brian Doyle‑Murray, honing a brand of physical, musical, and sketch comedy that would later define his work on Saturday Night Live (SNL). In 1975 he joined the inaugural cast of SNL, delivering iconic characters such as the Samurai, a manic Henry Kissinger, and the flamboyant Ludwig van Beethoven, while also introducing the world to the Blues Brothers duo with Aykroyd. His film career blossomed with roles in National Lampoon’s Animal House, The Blues Brothers, and the romantic comedy Continental Divide, each showcasing his ferocious energy, improvisational genius, and unexpected musical talent. Despite his enormous success, Belushi struggled with a prodigious drug habit that ultimately led to his untimely death at the age of 33, a loss mourned by fans, fellow performers, and a Hollywood that would forever remember him as the "live" heart of early SNL. Belushi’s legacy lives on through the enduring popularity of the Blues Brothers act, his posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the countless comedians who cite his fearless, boundary‑pushing style as a guiding influence. His story remains a cautionary tale of brilliance and tragedy, echoing in popular culture and the annals of comedy history.
