Joe Maross

Joe Maross was an American stage, film, and television actor whose prolific career spanned more than four decades, beginning in the early 1950s and winding down in the mid‑1980s. Born Joseph Raymond Maross on February 7, 1923, in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania, he served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii before taking advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend Yale University, where he earned a degree in theater arts in 1947. After Yale, Maross quickly moved onto Broadway, appearing in productions such as Ladies Night in a Turkish Bath (1949) and The Innkeepers (1955), establishing a solid foundation in live performance. His transition to the screen began with the 1958 World War II drama Run Silent, Run Deep, followed by roles in Elmer Gantry, Zig Zag, Sometimes a Great Notion, The Salzburg Connection, and Rich and Famous. While his film work was respectable, it was television that made his face a familiar sight to American households; he guest‑starred in iconic series of the era, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1959), three episodes of Perry Mason, Mission: Impossible, The Fugitive, The Outer Limits, Gunsmoke, The Virginian, The Time Tunnel (as George Armstrong Custer), Hawaii Five‑O, The Rockford Files, and The Cannon, among many others. Notably, he delivered memorable performances in two classic Twilight Zone episodes – “Third from the Sun” and “The Little People” – cementing his status as a versatile character actor. In the early 1980s he returned to a leading role as Captain Mike Benton in the ABC series Code Red, demonstrating his enduring talent even as his on‑screen appearances gradually diminished. Beyond acting, Maross co‑founded the Los Angeles‑based creative collective “Projects 58” and served as a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, contributing to the broader industry. He passed away from cardiac arrest on November 7, 2009, at the age of 86, in a convalescent hospital in Glendale, California, leaving behind a legacy of steady, reliable performances across stage, film, and television.
