Joan Tetzel

Joan Tetzel was born Joan Margaret Tetzel on June 21, 1921 in New York City and spent her childhood in the Spuyten Duyvil section of the Bronx. Her father, an Austrian illustrator, and her Scottish‑Canadian mother encouraged her artistic inclinations, even having her pose for his drawings as a youngster. At the age of thirteen she made her acting debut on a children’s radio program, quickly moving on to roles in popular CBS series such as When a Girl Marries and Woman of Courage. Her stage career began in 1938 with the Broadway production Lorelei at the Longacre Theatre, followed by a 1940 revival of Liliom and the original staging of I Remember Mama. In 1942 she signed a contract with the legendary producer David O Selznick, a move that was advertised with the line 'Miss Tetzel appears through the courtesy of David O Selznick' to protect her from unsolicited casting agents. These early experiences forged a versatile performer who could shift seamlessly between radio, stage and screen. Tetzel’s film debut arrived in 1946 with the Technicolor epic Duel in the Sun, and she soon appeared opposite Charles Coburn and Gregory Peck in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Paradine Case (1947) as Judy Flaquer. Subsequent screen credits include The File on Thelma Jordon (1950), the Arctic adventure Hell Below Zero (1954) and the literary adaptation Joy in the Morning (1965). On television she reunited with Hitchcock in an episode of his anthology series Alfred Hitchcock Presents, playing Eve Ross in 'Guest for Breakfast', and later turned up in Perry Mason, Thriller and Gunsmoke, demonstrating a talent for both drama and suspense. Her Broadway résumé remained impressive, with starring roles that landed her on the cover of Life Magazine on February 16, 1948; she portrayed Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and appeared in productions such as The Winner, Red Gloves and Pretty Little Parlor. Tetzel married radio producer John E Mosman in 1940, divorced in 1947, and in 1949 wed Austrian‑born actor Oskar Homolka, a partnership that lasted until her death. She passed away from cancer and pneumonia on October 31, 1977 at her home in Fairwarp, Sussex, England, aged 56, leaving behind a legacy of diverse performances across five decades of American entertainment.
