What's After the Movie

Jim Walton

Jim Walton (James Carr Walton, born June 7, 1948) is an American businessman and heir to the Walmart fortune, widely recognized as the youngest son of Sam Walton, co‑founder of the world's largest retailer. Raised in Newport, Arkansas, he was the third child of Sam and Helen Walton and grew up alongside siblings Rob, Alice and John, absorbing the entrepreneurial spirit that would shape his career. After graduating from Bentonville High School in 1965, where he captained the junior class, excelled in varsity football and learned to pilot a plane, he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on marketing at the University of Arkansas, graduating in 1971 and joining the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In 1972 he entered Walmart, initially handling the company's extensive real‑estate transactions, and by 1975 he transitioned to the family‑owned Walton Enterprises as its president, overseeing diversified investments. His board career accelerated when, on September 28 2005, he succeeded his late brother John on the Walmart Board of Directors, a seat he still occupies. Beyond retail, he served as chief executive and later chairman of Arvest Bank, and as chairman of Community Publishers Inc., a newspaper conglomerate rooted in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Together with his siblings he pledged roughly $2 billion to the Walton Family Foundation between 2008 and 2013, reflecting a long‑standing commitment to philanthropy. As of May 2025 Forbes listed him the 12th‑richest person globally with a net worth exceeding $114 billion, while Bloomberg placed him among the top twenty billionaires. Married to Lynne McNabb, the couple has four children—Alice “Annie”, Steuart, Thomas “Tom”, and James M.—and resides in Bentonville, Arkansas, where he continues to influence both corporate strategy and community development. His low‑profile yet decisive leadership style has earned him respect among peers and solidified the Walton family's enduring legacy in American retail and finance.
