Jide Kosoko

Jide Kosoko, born Babajide Kosoko on 12 January 1954, is a veteran Nigerian actor, director, and producer who has become a cornerstone of Nollywood and Yoruba theatre. He hails from the historic Kosoko royal family of Lagos Island, a lineage that bestowed upon him the traditional title of Omoba, reflecting his princely heritage. Kosoko’s early fascination with performance was sparked by the legendary Hubert Ogunde, and at the age of ten he entered the world of television by securing the role of Alabi in the 1964 tele‑movie Makanjuola, marking the start of a career that would span six decades. After completing studies in business administration at Yaba College of Technology, he honed his craft with the Awada Kerikeri troupe alongside icons such as Sunday Omobolanle and Lanre Hassan, and later appeared in popular series like New Masquerade. In 1972 he established his own theatre company, through which he wrote, directed, and produced numerous stage plays, including the acclaimed Ogun Ahoyaya. Transitioning to screen, Kosoko became a prolific figure in the video film era, producing Asiri n la (1992) and starring in pivotal works such as Tunde Kelani’s Ti Oluwa Ni'Le (part 2). His extensive filmography covers both English and Yoruba productions, ranging from early 1990s titles like Glamour Girls to contemporary blockbusters such as King of Boys (2018) and Elesin Oba, The King's Horseman (2022). Beyond acting, he serves as a brand ambassador for companies including Chivita, MeritAbode Limited, and Western Lotto, leveraging his public image for commercial endorsements. Recognized for his contributions, he received a nomination for Outstanding Male Actor at the 2021 Abuja International Film Festival for his role in Love Castle. Kosoko’s personal life reflects his cultural roots: he is married to Karimat Kosoko and Henrietta Kosoko and is the father of six children—Bidemi, Sola, Temilade, Tunji, Muyiwa, and Tunde—who continue his legacy in the entertainment industry.
