Born in Sparks, Nevada, she was inspired to become an actress after watching her mother perform in local theatre productions. Convinced of her passion, she moved to Los Angeles alongside her mother. After acing various auditions, Malone landed critical roles in television films like 'Bastard Out of Carolina' (1996) and 'Hope' (1997), earning her nominations for Independent Spirit and Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe Award respectively. She further won a Saturn Award for her performance in 'Contact' (1997) and 'Stepmom' (1998). She continued to grow impressively in the 2000s, starring in the cult film 'Donnie Darko' (2001), and making appearances in the drama 'Life as a House', the mini-series 'Hitler: The Rise of Evil', and the dark comedy film 'Saved!'. Malone's mature roles in films like 'Pride & Prejudice' (2005), 'The Ballad of Jack and Rose' (2005), 'Into the Wild' (2007) and 'The Ruins' (2008) have firmly established her.
