Jay Chou

Jay Chou Chieh‑lun (born 18 January 1979 in Linkou, Taipei County, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese singer‑songwriter, record producer, actor, television personality and businessman who has reshaped the Mandopop landscape for more than two decades. His debut album Jay (2000) introduced a daring blend of R&B, hip‑hop and classical motifs, while the follow‑up Fantasy (2001) cemented his status as a cultural phenomenon, selling over two million copies in Taiwan alone and earning him multiple Golden Melody Awards. Chou’s music is renowned for its intricate arrangements, often featuring traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng and Chinese flute alongside modern synths, and his signature mumbled vocal style has sparked endless debate among critics and fans. Beyond music, he founded JVR Music in 2007, directed the cult‑classic film Secret (2007), and achieved Hollywood exposure starring as Kato in The Green Hornet (2011) and appearing in Now You See Me 2 (2016). His 2022 album Greatest Works of Art became the world’s best‑selling record in pure sales that year, surpassing 7 million units globally and breaking historic first‑week sales records in China.
