Jason MacDonald

Jason MacDonald is a Canadian former mixed martial artist best known for his two tenures in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Born on June 3, 1975 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, he began training in Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu and earned a black belt before stepping into the professional cage in 1999. Over a fourteen‑year career he compiled a record of 41 fights, achieving 25 victories—19 of them by submission—and earning three Submission of the Night bonuses as well as a Knockout of the Night award. His early success in regional Canadian promotions such as the Maximum Fighting Championship paved the way for a debut against Ed Herman at Ortiz vs. Shamrock 3, where he stunned the crowd with a first‑round triangle choke and captured his first UFC submission accolade. Subsequent wins over fellow The Ultimate Fighter alumni Chris Leben and Jason Lambert solidified his reputation as a dangerous grappler, while memorable setbacks against Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami and Demian Maia demonstrated the volatile nature of the sport. After a series of mixed results, including a controversial knockout victory over Joe Doerksen that earned a $75,000 bonus, MacDonald was released from the UFC in 2009, only to return briefly in 2010 before a broken leg against John Salter forced a technical defeat. He officially retired on February 28, 2013, closing a chapter that included stints in King of the Cage and the Absolute Fighting Championships where he captured a light‑heavyweight title. Beyond fighting, MacDonald founded Pure Fitness & MMA in Red Deer, Alberta, and launched the Pure Fighting Championship promotion, mentoring a new generation of Canadian talent. He is also a certified CrossFit Level 1 trainer who co‑teaches the certification course at CrossFit HQ. Married to Kelly, the couple raise four children—sons Tristin and Keel, and daughters Jett and True—while Jason remains active in the fitness community and continues to influence the sport he helped popularize in Canada.
