Janis Carter

Janis Carter, born Janis Elinore Dremann on October 10, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, emerged as a versatile talent whose career spanned stage, film, and early television, earning her a lasting place in Hollywood history. After completing her elementary and secondary education in East Cleveland, she pursued higher studies at Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music, honing her abilities as a pianist and singer before turning to dramatic performance. When she entered the professional world, she adopted her grandmother’s maiden name, Carter, to avoid the mispronunciation of Dremann, a decision that would become her public identity. In the late 1930s she moved to New York with aspirations of an operatic career, but after those ambitions proved elusive she found success on Broadway, appearing in productions such as Du Barry Was a Lady (1939) and Panama Hattie (1940), where she caught the eye of studio executive Darryl F. Zanuck who offered her a film contract. Carter’s Hollywood debut came in 1941, and over the next fifteen years she appeared in more than thirty films for studios like 20th Century Fox, MGM, Columbia, and RKO, with notable roles in Night Editor (1946), Framed (1947), and Flying Leathernecks (1951) alongside stars such as Glenn Ford and John Wayne. By the mid‑1950s she returned to New York, transitioning to television where she co‑hosted the NBC daytime game show Feather Your Nest with Bud Collyer and acted in dramatic series including The Elgin Hour. Her personal life included two marriages: first to musician Carl Prager in 1942, ending in divorce in 1951, and later to lumber magnate Julius Stulman in 1956. After retiring from acting in early 1955, Carter settled in North Carolina, where she died of a heart attack on July 30, 1994 at the age of 80. Throughout her varied career she remained a dedicated performer whose contributions to both stage and screen reflect the dynamic evolution of American entertainment during the mid‑twentieth century.
