Janet Hubert

Janet Louise Hubert (born January 13, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actress and dancer whose career spans more than four decades, marked by versatility on stage, screen, and television. Raised on Chicago's South Side, she earned a scholarship to the Juilliard School in New York City, but left the program to pursue professional opportunities, beginning with the national tour of Dancin' which gave her early exposure to the rigors of touring performance. In 1981 she made her Broadway debut in the ensemble of The First, a short‑lived musical about Jackie Robinson, and later originated the role of Tantomile in the original Broadway production of Cats, also understudying the iconic characters Grizabella and Demeter. After departing Cats in April 1983, she starred in the national tour of Sophisticated Ladies opposite Dee Dee Bridgewater and Gregg Burge, solidifying her reputation as a dynamic stage performer. Hubert achieved mainstream fame when she was cast as Aunt Vivian in the hit sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel‑Air, appearing from the series premiere in 1990 through the end of season three in 1993; her portrayal earned a 1991 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Although she left the show amid controversy and was subsequently replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid, Hubert has consistently clarified that her departure was driven by personal safety concerns rather than a firing. Following Fresh Prince, she guest‑starred on Friends, Gilmore Girls, NYPD Blue, and numerous daytime soaps, including recurring roles on One Life to Live and General Hospital. In recent years she returned to the spotlight with appearances on Pose, The Ms. Pat Show, and a Daytime Emmy‑nominated performance as Mignon in the digital series King Ester. Beyond acting, Hubert is a vocal advocate for osteoporosis awareness, serving as an ambassador for the National Osteoporosis Foundation and speaking publicly about her own health challenges.
