Born on July 11, 1900, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the sixth child of renowned philosopher John Dewey and educator Alice Chipman Dewey, and her parents named her in honor of the celebrated activist Jane Addams and philanthropist Mary Rozet Smith. Dewey's early education at the Ethical Culture School and the Spence School in New York laid the foundation for her intellectual pursuits, after which she enrolled at Barnard College, earning her bachelor's degree in 1922. Demonstrating exceptional aptitude in the sciences, she continued her studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she completed her PhD in physical chemistry in 1925, positioning herself at the forefront of a new generation of women in physics.
Following her doctoral work, Dewey embarked upon an illustrious research career that spanned academia and government institutions. She spent two transformative years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Universitets Institut for Teoretisk Fysik in Copenhagen, where she collaborated with Nobel laureate Niels Bohr and future laureate Werner Heisenberg on emerging quantum mechanics theory, even delivering lectures on wave mechanics to their research team. Upon returning to the United States, she held a National Research Council fellowship at Princeton University before joining the University of Rochester in 1929, where she published extensively on the Stark effect of helium. In 1931, she became an assistant professor and later chair of the physics department at Bryn Mawr College, though her tenure was interrupted by health issues and the dissolution of her marriage to fellow physicist J. Alston Clark. After a period of unemployment, she taught at Hunter College before transitioning to industrial research at the United States Rubber Company, where she developed the landmark Dewey-Mackenzie estimate regarding elastic constants of composite materials. In 1947, she joined the Ballistic Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where she directed the Terminal Ballistics Laboratory and formulated the Slade-Dewey equation for explosive detonation, cementing her legacy in both theoretical and applied physics until her death in 1976.
