Jaleel White

Jaleel Ahmad White (born November 27, 1976) is an American actor best known for his iconic role as Steve Urkel on the sitcom Family Matters (1989‑1998), a character that originally appeared for a single episode before becoming the cultural centerpiece of the series. Raised in Culver City, California, White began performing in television commercials at age three, a path encouraged by his preschool teacher and supported by his mother, who later became his manager. After early guest spots on shows such as The Jeffersons and a brief stint on the short‑lived sitcom Charlie and Company, he landed the part that would define his career at the age of twelve, delivering a performance that combined nerdy physical comedy with a distinctive high‑pitched nasal voice, resulting in a phenomenon that extended to merchandise like Urkel‑Os cereal and an Urkel doll. In addition to playing Steve, White showcased his range by portraying multiple members of the Urkel family, including the suave alter ego Stefan Urquelle and the quirky Myrtle Urkel, and he even contributed as a writer, penning an episode at nineteen that became the show's highest‑rated episode of that year. Beyond Family Matters, White voiced the first American version of Sonic the Hedgehog in the DiC animated series, expanding his repertoire into voice work for Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic SatAM, and Sonic Underground. After the sitcom ended, he pursued diverse projects ranging from the UPN comedy Grown Ups to guest appearances on Boston Legal, House, Castle, Psych and Bones, while also exploring web series creation with Fake It Till You Make It. A UCLA graduate with a BA in film and television, White has continued to evolve as an actor, producer, and writer, most recently hosting the game show Flip Side in 2024 and remaining active in both entertainment and entrepreneurial ventures such as his cannabis line featuring the Purple Urkle strain.
