Jake Roberts

Aurelian Smith Jr., better known by his ring name Jake "The Snake" Roberts, was born on May 30, 1955 in Gainesville, Texas, the son of famed wrestler Grizzly Smith. Growing up in a turbulent household, he endured abuse and instability before finding solace in the world of professional wrestling, where he debuted in 1975 after a brief stint as a referee. Roberts quickly distinguished himself with a dark charisma and masterful psychological storytelling, pioneering the use of the DDT finish and the dramatic inclusion of live snakes—most famously a python named Damien—into his matches, creating a legacy that would influence generations of wrestlers. His first major national exposure came with the World Wrestling Federation in 1986, where feuds with Ricky Steamboat, The Honky Tonk Man, and later The Undertaker showcased his ability to blend intense promos with eerie in‑ring psychology. Beyond the WWF, he competed in NWA, WCW, AAA, ECW, TNA, and numerous independent promotions, capturing titles such as the NWA National Television Championship and the SMW Heavyweight Championship, while also appearing in films, television shows, and documentaries like Beyond the Mat and The Resurrection of Jake the Snake. Despite his professional success, Roberts battled severe alcohol and drug addiction, leading to health crises, multiple hospitalizations, and a public struggle with cancer, pneumonia, and chronic respiratory disease; his recovery was aided by former colleague Diamond Dallas Page and a 14‑week WWE‑sponsored rehab program. In the 2010s he reinvented himself as a podcaster and YouTube personality with The Snake Pit, and in 2014 was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, followed by the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2020. Continuing his influence, he signed with All Elite Wrestling in 2019, serving as a special advisor and managing talent such as Lance Archer, while also contributing to AEW’s community outreach initiatives.
