Jacques Erwin, born Herwin Frédéric Roger Follot on 22 December 1908 in Paris, France, quickly became a prominent figure of French stage and screen, navigating a career that spanned more than two decades of turbulent cinematic history. His early training in the vibrant theatrical circles of the 1930s provided a solid foundation for a film debut in Julien Duvivier’s Moon Over Morocco (1931), where he portrayed the mysterious Midlock, showcasing a natural charisma that would define many of his later roles. Throughout the 1930s, Erwin demonstrated remarkable range, appearing in diverse productions such as Christian‑Jaque’s L'atroce menace and Fritz Lang’s adaptation of Liliom, where he embodied a tragic suicide‑candidate with subtle nuance. By the late 1930s, he had secured leading parts in high‑profile films like Sacha Guitry’s Remontons les Champs‑Élysées (1938), in which he played a young Louis XIV and the Duke of Montpensier, and Maurice Tourneur’s Katia (1938), delivering a compelling performance as the Russian diplomat Trubetzkoïy.

Erwin’s post‑war career continued to flourish on both boards and sets, directing the theatrical production L'Autre Aventure (1945) at Théâtre l'Apollo and starring in Jean Delannoy’s acclaimed Les jeux sont faits (1947).
