Isabelle Weingarten

Isabelle Weangarten (born 18 April 1950 in Paris, France) was a multifaceted French artist whose career spanned acting, modeling, and photography, leaving an indelible mark on French cultural life. Born into an artistic lineage—her maternal grandparents were the noted art dealer Pierre Loeb and Silvia Loeb‑Luzzatto, while her paternal grandparents included Polish‑Jewish painter Joachim Weingart and sculptor Muriel Marquet‑Pontrémoli—she was immersed in creative influences from an early age. Discovered in 1971 by the legendary director Robert Bresson, she secured the lead role in Four Nights of a Dreamer, instantly launching her presence in French cinema and establishing her reputation as a compelling screen actress. She further cemented her cinematic legacy with a striking performance in The Mother and the Whore (1973) directed by Jean Eustache, a film that remains a touchstone of the French New Wave. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s she appeared in a series of notable films, including La Belle au bois dormant (1973) and The State of Things (1982), demonstrating a versatile range that encompassed both avant‑garde and mainstream projects.
