What's After the Movie
Inga Swenson was an American actress and singer whose career spanned nearly five decades, beginning with a stage debut in 1949 and concluding with her retirement in 1998. Born on December 29, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska, she was the youngest of three children and displayed a prodigious talent for public speaking and music early on, winning national speech contests while still a junior at Omaha Central High School. After graduating in 1950, she honed her craft at Northwestern University, studying drama under Alvina Krause, and quickly moved into professional theatre, appearing in productions such as New Faces of ’56 and The First Gentleman. Her Broadway breakthrough came with the role of Lizzie Curry in the 1964 musical 110 in the Shade, earning her a Tony nomination, and she repeated this honor with her portrayal of Irene Adler in the 1965 musical Baker Street. Swenson was also a life member of The Actors Studio, and she considered her performance as Lizzie Currie her favorite role. On screen, she appeared in notable films like Advise & Consent and The Miracle Worker (both 1962), and she became a familiar face on television, most famously as the sharp‑tongued housekeeper Gretchen Kraus on the sitcom Benson (1979‑86), a role that garnered three Emmy nominations. Earlier, she had a memorable stint on the soap opera Soap as the scheming Ingrid Svenson, demonstrating her versatility across genres. Beyond her professional achievements, Swenson married actor‑singer Lowell Harris in 1953; the couple raised two sons, Mark and James, the latter tragically dying in a motorcycle accident in 1987. Inga Swenson passed away in Los Angeles on July 23, 2023, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished performances on stage, film, and television that continue to inspire new generations of performers.
