Imani Hakim

Imani Hakim was born on August 12, 1993 in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in a large family with two older brothers and three younger brothers. From the tender age of seven she stepped onto the stage at the Karamu House Theater, where her passion for performance began to blossom. By eleven she had convinced her parents to let her chase a professional acting career, prompting a move to Los Angeles with her father. The transition was arduous; the family endured periods of homelessness, often sleeping in their car, yet the hardship forged a resilient spirit. Within a few months of arriving in California, Hakim secured her breakout role as Tonya Rock, the spirited younger sister on the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, a part she inhabited from 2005 until the series concluded in 2009 while being homeschooled. During this formative period she refined her craft at Alexander's Workshop School in Lakewood and The Young Actor’s Space in Burbank, laying a solid foundation for a versatile career. Following her early television success, Hakim transitioned to film and biographical storytelling, portraying Olympic gold‑medalist gymnast Gabby Douglas in the 2014 Lifetime movie The Gabby Douglas Story, a performance praised for its authenticity and emotional depth. She then appeared in the comedy‑drama Chocolate City (2015) and later took on the role of Dana, a savvy video‑game tester, on Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed series Mythic Quest, a role she continues to expand as the show entered its third and fourth seasons. In 2020 she co‑starred in Dinner Party and maintained a steady presence in both television and independent cinema. Beyond the screen, Hakim lives a vegan lifestyle, dedicates her free time to painting, and shares a creative partnership with fellow Mythic Quest actor Chris Naoki Lee, to whom she is engaged. The couple welcomed their first child, Kazuo‑Marley Hakim Lee, on February 2, 2025, marking a new chapter in her personal narrative.
