What's After the Movie
Harry Stafford was an English footballer and pivotal figure in the history of Manchester United Football Club, serving as the club's first captain during its critical transition from Newton Heath. Born in Crewe, Cheshire, Stafford initially worked as a locomotive boilermaker for the London & North Western Railway at Crewe Works while simultaneously forging a distinguished sporting career. He began his football journey with Crewe Alexandra in 1890, making his debut on 22 September 1890 against Birmingham St George's in the Football Alliance. During his six-year tenure with the Railwaymen, he made over 150 appearances, served as captain of the Cheshire county team, and won consecutive Cheshire Senior Cup medals in 1891–92 and 1892–93. Beyond football, Stafford was a versatile athlete who competed in distances ranging from 100 yards to the half-mile, and he was particularly renowned as an exceptional hurdler representing Crewe Alexandra Athletic Club until his transition to professional football forced him to abandon amateur athletics.
In 1896, Stafford joined Newton Heath, immediately establishing himself as the first-choice right-back and eventually assuming the club captaincy after Caesar Jenkyns's departure. He became instrumental in saving the club from financial ruin in 1902 when, following a winding-up order over £2,600 of debt, he orchestrated a fateful meeting with wealthy brewery owner John Henry Davies using his St. Bernard dog, Major, as a catalyst for involvement. On 26 April 1902, Stafford captained Newton Heath in their final match before the club's transformation into Manchester United, securing a 2–1 victory over Manchester City in the Manchester Senior Cup final. He subsequently became the club's first captain under the new Manchester United banner, effectively serving as captain-manager-director until reverting to amateur status upon joining the board. His tenure ended controversially in December 1904 when he received a two-and-a-half-year suspension from the FA for illegal payments and bookkeeping irregularities. After working as a landlord and hotelier, including hosting the formation of the footballers' union at his Imperial Hotel in 1907, Stafford emigrated to North America in 1911, working as a boilermaker in New York before becoming a boiler inspector in Montreal, where he died penniless on 24 October 1940.
