Han Han

Han Han (born 23 September 1982 in Shanghai) is a Chinese novelist, short‑story writer, essayist, rally driver, blogger, singer and film director who became a cultural icon for the post‑80s generation. He first attracted national attention in 1999 when, still a high‑school student, he won the New Concept Writing Competition with the essay “Seeing Ourselves in a Cup”, a victory that sparked heated debate about China’s education reforms. After repeatedly failing examinations he left formal schooling and launched a prolific literary career, publishing the best‑selling novel Triple Door in 2000, which sold over twenty million copies and cemented his status as one of the most widely read authors of his generation. His subsequent novels such as Like a Speeding Youth, Riot in Chang’an City and His Kingdom continued to dominate bestseller lists, while his essays and blog posts—accumulating more than three hundred million hits—made him the most followed personal blog in China and a frequent provocateur of social and political discourse. In parallel with his writing, Han pursued a passion for motorsport, joining professional rally teams from 2003 onward and competing in events ranging from the China Rally to the World Rally Championship round in Australia in 2009; he claimed the Chinese Rally Championship title in 2012 with Subaru. He expanded into music with the 2006 album R‑18 and into cinema, directing The Continent (2014) and subsequent films such as Duckweed (2017) and Pegasus (2019). Despite his popularity, he has faced controversies, including the “Han‑Bai” literary feud, criticism of modern poetry, and ghost‑writing accusations that led to high‑profile lawsuits. Recognised by Time in its 2010 “Time 100” list and repeatedly ranked on the Forbes China Celebrity 100, Han Han remains a polarising yet undeniably influential figure in contemporary Chinese culture. His entrepreneurial ventures include the launch of an online bookstore on Taobao in 2009 and the creation of digital magazines such as One, reflecting his ongoing interest in reshaping media consumption. While his outspoken style has earned both fervent admirers and sharp detractors, Han continues to influence a generation of Chinese youth through his multidisciplinary work.
