Gisle Straume

Gisle Straume (26 August 1917 – 1 December 1988) was a distinguished Norwegian actor and theatre director whose career spanned several decades in the mid-20th century. Born in Holla Municipality, he was the son of farmer and headmaster Eivind Straume and teacher Brita Monsine Skanke Aarnes, which likely provided him with a strong appreciation for both education and the arts from an early age. Straume became one of the most respected figures in Norwegian theatre, beginning his professional career at Det Norske Teatret from 1945 to 1951. He then briefly moved to Den Nationale Scene between 1951 and 1952 before returning to Det Norske Teatret from 1952 to 1955, where he honed his craft and established himself as a versatile performer. In 1956, he took on his first major directorial role as theatre director at Rogaland Teater, a position he held until 1958, demonstrating his talents behind the scenes as well as in front of audiences. From 1959 to 1963, Straume worked at the prestigious National Theatre in Oslo, one of Norway's most esteemed theatrical institutions. He returned to Den Nationale Scene as theatre director from 1963 to 1967, further cementing his reputation as a leading figure in Norwegian dramatic arts. Straume then returned to the National Theatre in Oslo from 1967 to 1976, continuing to contribute to the country's rich theatrical tradition. Beyond his stage work, Straume became particularly beloved for his role as "lektor Tørrdal" in Stompa, a Norwegian adaptation of the Jennings novels, which was produced as a series of radio plays and films for children. His portrayal of the character made him a household name among Norwegian families and children. In his personal life, Straume married actress Julia Back in 1948, though this marriage was later dissolved. In 1963, he married journalist and actress Sonja Cora Christensen. For his significant contributions to Norwegian culture and the arts, Straume was decorated as a Knight, First Class of the Order of St. Olav in 1983, one of Norway's highest honors. He passed away on 1 December 1988 at the age of 71, leaving behind a substantial legacy in Norwegian performing arts that continues to be remembered and celebrated.
