George Selway

Henry George Selway, known professionally as George Selway, was an English actor born on 21 February 1924 in Marylebone, London, England. As the only child of Henry Selway and his wife Ann "Annie" (née Gartland), he grew up in London and developed an early interest in performing arts, with official records from the 1939 England and Wales Register already listing his occupation as actor at the young age of 15. Selway embarked on his professional acting career on the stage, making his theatrical debut on 14 March 1945 as Geoffrey in a production of Great Day at the age of 21. This marked the beginning of a prolific and dedicated career that would span 35 years across multiple mediums including theatre, television, film, and radio. His versatility as a performer allowed him to establish himself in various entertainment formats throughout the post-war era, becoming a recognizable and respected figure in British performing arts during the mid-20th century and contributing significantly to the golden age of British television and theatre.

Selway made his television debut on 27 November 1947 with the role of Fred in the television film Saloon Bar, and subsequently made his broadcasting debut on 26 March 1955 as the voice of Tony Lumpkin in the BBC Home Service programme Saturday Night Theatre, demonstrating his vocal talents and range as a radio performer. His transition to cinema followed on 27 May 1957 when he appeared as Paddy in the crime film The Secret Place, marking his entry into feature films. However, he is perhaps best remembered by television audiences for his portrayal of Tom Humphries in the third series of the ITV comedy drama Beryl's Lot (1976–1977), a role he took over from Mark Kingston who had portrayed the character in the first two series. In his personal life, Selway was married twice: first to actress Vanda Godsell from October 1954 until their divorce in 1957, and subsequently to fellow actress Patricia Greene from October 1959 until their divorce a few years later. Selway officially retired from acting on 19 July 1980 following his final performance as Geoffrey Fisher in the Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company's production of Billy Liar. He passed away in Camden, Greater London, in May 1994 at the age of 70, leaving behind a substantial legacy in British theatre and screen entertainment that spanned over three decades of memorable performances.
