Gail Strickland

Gail Strickland (born May 18, 1945) is a retired American actress whose career spanned more than four decades, encompassing memorable supporting roles in both film and television. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she was one of five children of Theodosia and Lynn Strickland, owners of a large tire dealership, and her early desire for attention led her to write and perform plays during her youth. After graduating from Brooke Hill School, she attended Florida State University where she excelled as a gymnast, became the first female clown in the university circus, and earned a teaching certificate in English, all while working in community theater in Sarasota during summer breaks. A brief stint as a governess in Spain and later as a waitress in Cape Cod preceded her move to New York, where she balanced a receptionist job at an advertising agency with improvisational acting studies and enrollment at the Sanford Meisner Drama School, gaining early experience in commercials and soap operas. Strickland’s television breakthrough arrived in the early 1970s with an appearance as Sister Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, followed by a notable role as the alcoholic nurse Captain Helen Whitfield on MASH*. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s she built a robust résumé with guest spots on The Bob Newhart Show, Night Court, and Cagney & Lacey, while also delivering strong supporting performances in films such as The Drowning Pool (1975), Bound for Glory (1976), Who’ll Stop the Rain (1978), Norma Rae (1979) and Protocol (1984). In the 1990s she continued to appear in high‑profile series, playing Olive Davis on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Alixus on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Mrs. Landis in two iconic Seinfeld episodes. Her portrayal of nurse practitioner Marilyn McGrath on HeartBeat is credited as one of the earliest lesbian characters on a U.S. network series. A cast member of the short‑lived First Monday in 2002, Strickland retired after a diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia in the early 1990s made line delivery increasingly difficult. She married advertising executive Neil Baker in 1990, and the couple has one daughter, Maisy, as well as a stepson, Chris Baker. Despite her retirement, her extensive body of work remains a testament to her versatility and resilience in the entertainment industry.
