Franklyn Ajaye

Franklyn Ajaye (born May 13, 1949) is an American stand‑up comedian, actor, and writer whose career spans more than five decades. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Los Angeles by a Sierra Leonean father, Franklin Ajaye Sr., and an American mother, Quetta Curtis, a background he often jokes makes him a 'true African‑American'. Ajaye attended Dorsey High School in the Crenshaw district before launching his comedy career with the release of his debut album Franklyn Ajaye, Comedian in 1973. The following year he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, establishing a national profile that led to frequent television spots, including a memorable routine on The Flip Wilson Show the same year. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he recorded five comedy albums, most notably I'm a Comedian, Seriously (1974) and Don’t Smoke Dope, Fry Your Hair (1977), the latter showcasing his trademark observational humor and rapid‑fire delivery. In addition to stand‑up, Ajaye built a substantial acting résumé, starring as a principal character in the 1976 ensemble comedy Car Wash and delivering a supporting turn in Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy (1978). His filmography later expanded to include roles in Stir Crazy (1980), The ‘Burbs (1989), and a cameo as the father of Lillian in the hit comedy Bridesmaids (2011). After relocating to Melbourne, Australia, in 1997, he continued to tour internationally, appearing on Australian programs such as The Panel and Thank God You’re Here while still returning to the United States for projects like the HBO series Deadwood and its 2019 film continuation. Ajaye’s contributions to comedy have been recognized with two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program, for In Living Color (1990) and Politically Incorrect (1997). He is also the author of Comic Insights: The Art of Standup Comedy, a collection of interviews with leading comedians that offers practical advice for aspiring performers. Today, Ajaye remains an influential figure whose blend of sharp social commentary, improvisational skill, and cross‑cultural perspective continues to inspire new generations of comedians worldwide.
