Fafá de Belém

Fafá de Belém (born Maria de Fátima Palha de Figueiredo on August 9, 1956 in Belém, Pará) is celebrated as one of the most powerful and versatile voices of Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) and a prominent Brazilian actress. Her career launched publicly in 1973 when she performed in her hometown, and by the following year she was already sharing stages with Zé Rodrix in Rio de Janeiro and Sérgio Ricardo in both Belém and Salvador, quickly gaining regional fame. In 1974 she broke onto the national charts with the hit “Filho da Bahia,” and that same year contributed a song to the soundtrack of the TV Globo soap opera Gabriela, marking her entry into mainstream media. The release of her debut LP Tamba Tajá in 1976 earned critical acclaim and solidified her reputation as a serious recording artist, while her husky mezzo‑soprano proved capable of expressing tender ballads, passionate love songs, Portuguese fados, lively sambas and even lambadas. During the early 1980s she became a cultural symbol of Brazil’s struggle for free elections, performing “Menestrel das Alagoas” before a million‑strong crowd in Rio and boldly singing the Brazilian National Anthem at mass gatherings, actions that placed her at odds with the then‑military regime. Her 1993 album Meu Fado achieved platinum status in Portugal, confirming her international appeal, and subsequent releases such as Tanto Mar (2004), a tribute to Chico Buarque, and Novo Millennium (2005) demonstrated both commercial success and artistic depth, the latter selling half a million copies in its first month. After a ten‑year recording hiatus she returned in 2015 with Do Tamanho Certo para o Meu Sorriso, a homage to Pará brega that blended classic and previously unreleased tracks, and in 2019 her album Humana was named among the 25 best Brazilian albums of the first half of the year by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. Beyond music, she has acted in television and film, further enriching Brazil’s cultural landscape, and continues to perform actively, maintaining a career that spans more than five decades.
