Erminio Spalla

Erminio Spalla, nicknamed "Occhiovivo" (Bright Eyes), was a remarkably multifaceted Italian artist who achieved distinction in the brutal arena of professional boxing before conquering the worlds of opera, fine arts, and cinema. Born on July 7, 1897, in Borgo San Martino, Italy, Spalla initially pursued rigorous academic training in fine arts at the prestigious Brera Academy, but his life took a dramatic turn in 1910 when he viewed footage of the world boxing championships and resolved to enter the ring. Standing at an imposing 1.85 meters with an orthodox stance, he quickly dominated the heavyweight division throughout the 1920s, making history as the first Italian boxer ever to capture a European heavyweight title in 1923—a reign he held until losing to Paulino Uzcudun in 1926. After retiring from the sport in 1927 following his initial loss of the championship, he briefly returned to the ring in 1934 to win all three of his final bouts, demonstrating the competitive fire that defined his athletic career.

Following his permanent retirement from boxing, Spalla embarked on an extraordinarily diverse artistic journey that showcased his immense creative talents across multiple disciplines. In October 1937, he made his operatic debut performing in Nel Trovatore in Turin, revealing a powerful baritone voice that complemented his commanding physical presence. Simultaneously, he returned to his original passions of sculpture and painting, creating visual works that reflected his academic training and aesthetic sensibilities. His cinematic career commenced in 1939 with Mario Bonnard's Io, suo padre, launching a prolific three-decade screen career that encompassed over fifty films and television productions. Audiences particularly remember his memorable portrayal of Mangiafuoco in The Adventures of Pinocchio (1947) and his role as the mechanic "Mago Bakù" Brambilla in the war film Giarabub (1942). His final screen appearance came in 1969 with Sandro Bolchi's I fratelli Karamazov, just two years before his death in Rome on August 14, 1971, at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy as one of Italy's most versatile sporting and cultural figures.
