Eliza Hittman, born on December 9, 1979, is an acclaimed American screenwriter, film director, and producer hailing from New York City. She is widely recognized for her award-winning film Never Rarely Sometimes Always, which won her the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the National Society of Film Critics Award for best screenplay. Born and raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Hittman nurtured her passion for theatre at the Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn. She graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2001, majoring in theater and drama, and later pursued her interest in art and film at the California Institute of the Arts, where she earned her MFA in 2010. Throughout her career, Hittman has created a vast body of significant work, including her first feature film, It Felt Like Love, and her second film Beach Rats. For her exceptional work in the film industry, she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Indie Film in 2013. Hittman reveals her long-spanning career doesn’t look to falter anytime soon and is quoted expressing her ongoing passion with 'something simmering inside my head' regarding future creative concepts. She currently holds a position at the Pratt Institute as an assistant professor, imparting her years of experience and knowledge in Film/Video Department for the School of Art. Her unique film-making style is known to revolve around themes of teen sexuality and female adversity, using powerful narratives and often shooting long takes close to the character. Hittman has been recognized throughout her career, receiving numerous nominations and awards, including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for film-video in 2018.
