Eiko Masuyama

Eiko Masuyama (born Tomoko Masada on April 22, 1936) was a pioneering Japanese actress and voice talent whose career spanned nearly seven decades, leaving an indelible mark on the evolution of anime and Japanese broadcasting. Born in Tokyo City as the youngest of four sisters, she struggled with slow speech in childhood, prompting a teacher’s admonition that she “couldn’t talk properly,” which motivated her to join the Children’s Theater Company at age twelve to improve her diction. Under the mentorship of veteran actress Miyoko Asō, Masuyama overcame her speech complex and discovered a passion for performance that would guide her lifelong vocation. After graduating from the children’s troupe, she entered the Sanno theatrical company founded by Sandayū Dokumamushi and Yasushi Inayoshi, eventually signing with Aoni Production in the early 1960s where she began to specialize in voice work for its flexible schedule, allowing her to balance professional commitments with childcare responsibilities. Masuyama’s most celebrated roles include originating Fujiko Mine in the landmark series Lupin III and embodying the heroic title character Honey Kisaragi in Cutie Honey, both of which cemented her reputation as a versatile and charismatic voice actress capable of conveying sly allure and spirited determination. She also lent her distinctive voice to Bakabon's Mama in the long‑running comedy Tensai Bakabon, demonstrating her talent for maternal warmth and comedic timing. In addition to anime, she contributed narration to numerous programs and portrayed supporting characters in classics such as Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Devilman. Her contributions were formally recognized when she received the “Anime Outreach Category” award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2017, followed by the prestigious “Merit Award” at the 15th Seiyu Awards in 2021, honoring her decades‑long influence on the industry. Eiko Masuyama continued to work up until her final years, with her last credited activity recorded in 2024.
