Edward Snowden

Edward Joseph Snowden is a former intelligence contractor and whistleblower whose revelations irrevocably altered global perceptions of digital privacy. Born on June 21, 1983 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, he grew up in a family with a long tradition of public service, attended Anne Arundel Community College, and pursued an unfinished master's degree in computer security at the University of Liverpool. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army Special Forces program, Snowden worked as a security guard at the University of Maryland before joining the CIA in 2006, where he received extensive technical training and diplomatic cover in Geneva. He later moved to Dell and then Booz Allen Hamilton, gaining privileged access to the NSA’s global surveillance infrastructure. In May 2013, he fled the United States, arriving in Hong Kong where he began sharing thousands of classified documents with journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Barton Gellman, exposing programs such as PRISM, XKeyscore, and Tempora. The disclosures sparked worldwide debate about government overreach, privacy rights, and the balance between security and civil liberties. The U.S. Department of Justice promptly charged him with violations of the Espionage Act, revoking his passport and forcing him to remain in the transit zone of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport before being granted temporary asylum and later Russian citizenship. Since 2016 he has served as president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, authored the memoir Permanent Record, and continued advocating for digital rights, while living in Russia with his wife and two children. His complex legacy intertwines technical expertise, moral conviction, and enduring controversy, making him a pivotal figure in modern discussions of surveillance and freedom.
