Edward Berger, born on 25 June 1970 in Wolfsburg, West Germany, grew up in a middle‑class family with a Swiss mother and an Austrian father who worked as a logistics manager for Volkswagen. After completing his secondary education at Theodor‑Heuss‑Gymnasium, he pursued visual arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig before transferring to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned his directing degree in 1994.
