Eduard Martsevich

Eduard Evgenievich Martsevich was born on December 29, 1936 in Tbilisi, then part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, USSR. After completing his studies at the prestigious Mikhail Schepkin Higher Theatre School in 1959, he embarked on a prolific career that spanned more than five decades, becoming one of the most respected figures in Soviet and Russian theater and cinema. His early work at the Mayakovsky Theatre (1959‑1969) showcased a versatile talent that quickly earned him roles in both stage productions and film, including his memorable performance as Arkady Kirsanov in Fathers and Sons (1958) and as Boris Drubetskoi in the televised adaptation of War and Peace (1965‑1966). Martsevich’s artistic journey was closely intertwined with the influential director Nikolay Okhlopkov, and his brief foray into directing led him to study under Juozas Miltinis in Panevezys, Lithuania, further expanding his theatrical expertise. In 1969 he joined the renowned Academic Maly Theater of the USSR, where he remained a central figure for the rest of his life, continuously delivering powerful interpretations of classic and contemporary characters while also contributing as a theatre teacher and director.\n\nRecognized for his outstanding contributions, Martsevich was honored with the title People’s Artist of the RSFSR in 1987, following an earlier award as Honored Artist in 1974. His filmography includes a wide range of roles, from the adventurous Finn Malmgren in The Red Tent (1969) to the dignified Prince Shtcherbatsky in the 2007 TV mini‑series Anna Karenina. Beyond his artistic achievements, he was a devoted family man, married to Liliya and father to two sons, Kirill and Philipp, both of whom followed in his theatrical footsteps. Until his final days, Martsevich remained active on stage at the State Academic Maly Theater, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire actors and directors across Russia.
