Duane Jones

Duane Lionel Jones (April 11, 1937 – July 22, 1988) was an American actor, theater director, and educator whose career broke significant racial barriers in cinema and the performing arts. Born in New York City to Mildred (née Gordon) Jones, he grew up with a sister, Marva, and a brother, Henry, before earning a B.A. at the University of Pittsburgh and studying at the Sorbonne in Paris. After returning to the United States, he completed an M.A. in Communications at New York University while already working on his landmark role in Night of the Living Dead. Before he entered the acting world, Jones served as a Phelps‑Stokes exchange scholar in Niger, taught literature at Long Island University, and developed English‑language training for the Peace Corps, showcasing his deep commitment to education and cross‑cultural exchange. He also helped design Harlem Preparatory School, heading its English department, which highlighted his dedication to improving academic opportunities for underserved youth. His groundbreaking performance as Ben in George A. Romero’s 1968 horror classic made him the first African‑American actor to be cast as the lead hero in a mainstream horror film, a casting decision Romero insisted was based solely on talent, not race. This historic moment opened doors for future Black actors in genre cinema and cemented Jones’s place in film history. Beyond his iconic film role, Jones continued to work in cinema with appearances in Ganja & Hess (1973), Losing Ground (1982) and Beat Street (1984), though he often expressed frustration that audiences reduced his identity to a single character. From 1972‑1976 he oversaw the literature department at Antioch College, then served as executive director of the Black Theatre Alliance (1976‑1981), and later led the Richard Allen Center for Culture and Art in Manhattan, promoting African‑American theater and training a diverse cohort of actors at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Jones died of cardiopulmonary arrest on July 22 1988 in Mineola, New York, at age 51. He was cremated and his ashes returned to his family. His legacy endures through the Duane L. Jones Recital Hall at SUNY Old Westbury and a tribute in the comic series The Walking Dead where a character bears his name, reflecting his lasting impact on both stage and screen.
