Doris Davenport

Doris Davenport (born January 17, 1917 in Moline, Illinois) was an American actress who briefly illuminated Hollywood during the late 1930s and early 1940s. From a young age she dreamed of the stage; her parents nurtured this ambition by arranging voice lessons and drama classes, allowing the five‑year‑old to rehearse lines in their home. After moving from Davenport, Iowa to Los Angeles, she secured a minor role in the 1934 comedy Kid Millions, which marked the start of a short but memorable film career. Although a contract with Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer promised stability, Davenport soon realized that the studio treated her no better than an extra, prompting her to explore radio work and little‑theater productions in New York while also modeling for advertisements. Under the screen name Doris Jordan, she auditioned for the iconic role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind; although she did not win, her performance impressed studio chief Samuel Goldwyn enough to earn a leading part in John Ford’s 1940 western The Westerner, starring opposite Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. The same year she appeared in Behind the News opposite Lloyd Nolan, a film that would become her final screen credit before she stepped away from acting due to a dearth of further offers. During her modeling years she met photographer V. G. Weaver, Jr., and the two married on April 12, 1938 in Fordston, Arizona; their union ended in divorce on July 18, 1941. After retiring, Davenport settled in Santa Cruz, California, where she lived for a decade before passing away on June 18, 1980 at the age of 63. Though her filmography consists of only a handful of titles, her brief brilliance and the determination she displayed as a child‑dreamer continue to be remembered by classic‑film enthusiasts. Her legacy, while modest in volume, offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by young actresses navigating the studio system of Golden Age Hollywood, and her work on The Westerner remains a point of reference for scholars studying gender roles in Western genre cinema.
