Detlev Buck

Detlev Buck (born 1 December 1962 in Bad Segeberg, West Germany) is a prolific German film director, actor, producer and screenwriter whose career spans over four decades. From the moment he shot his first short film Work and Leisure in 1982, Buck demonstrated a restless creative energy, quickly moving from experimental shorts to full‑length features. His breakthrough came with the cult classic Karniggels (1991), a quirky comedy that earned him the Bavarian Film Award for Best New Director and announced him as a fresh voice in German cinema. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s he alternated between directing commercially successful family films such as the Bibi & Tina series and more daring projects like Tough Enough (2006), showing a rare versatility in tone and genre. Buck is also famous for his frequent cameo appearances, a trademark that mirrors the self‑referential style of directors like Hitchcock; his most internationally recognized acting role is as Eva’s father in Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or winning The White Ribbon (2009). In addition to directing and acting, he has written and produced numerous screenplays, often adapting literary works such as Measuring the World (2012).
