Dennis Arundell

Dennis Drew Arundell OBE (22 July 1898 – 10 December 1988) was a multifaceted figure in British theatre and opera, renowned as an actor, librettist, opera scholar, translator, producer, director, conductor and composer of incidental music. Born in Finchley, London, England, he pursued Classics and Music at St John's College, Cambridge, but his studies were interrupted by the First World War, during which he was gassed in 1918 and invalided out of service. After the war he returned to Cambridge as a Fellow (1923‑1929), where he mounted the first staging of Handel’s Semele in 1926 and introduced an early British performance of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du soldat. His early stage work included the title role in Pirandello’s Enrico IV with designs by Cecil Beaton and a lifelong devotion to Purcell, producing The Fairy‑Queen in Hyde Park (1927) and editing King Arthur (1928). His professional acting debut came at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1926, and by 1933 he had joined the Old Vic, playing Lucio in Measure for Measure, Scandal in Love for Love and Antonio in The Tempest, while also composing incidental music. He originated Lord Peter Wimsey on stage in Busman’s Honeymoon and created the obsessive husband in Gas Light.

After World II Arundell turned his focus to opera, becoming a celebrated producer, translator and teacher. His translations included Le Roi David, Háry János, Schwanda the Bagpiper, Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, From the House of the Dead and Il matrimonio segreto. He produced notable operas for Sadler’s Wells, such as I quatro rusteghi (1946), Faust (1947), the UK premiere of Katya Kabanova (1951), Tosca and The Flying Dutchman. His production of The Bohemian Girl at Covent Garden (1951) and the first staging of Irmelin at Oxford (1953) displayed his dramatic vigor and historical insight. From 1959 to 1973 he served as head of opera at the Royal College of Music, while also consulting for Australian Opera and the Finnish National Theatre. Arundell authored scholarly works on Purcell and Sadler’s Wells, lectured widely, and contributed regularly to Opera magazine, leaving a lasting imprint on 20th‑century British musical theatre.
