Dean Andrews

Dean Andrews is an English actor and versatile performer whose career spans television drama, soap operas, and documentary narration. Born on 6 August 1963 in Rotherham, West Riding of Yorkshire, he grew up attending Sitwell Junior School and Oakwood Comprehensive, sharing classrooms with future television personality James May. After leaving school he honed his musical talents as a cruise‑ship entertainer, a period that refined his stage presence and singing ability before he was discovered by acclaimed director Ken Loach, who cast him in the 2001 film The Navigators. This cinematic debut opened doors to a steady stream of television work, beginning with a supporting role in the Channel 4 drama Buried—which later won a BAFTA for Best Drama Series—and a brief appearance in No Angels. In 2005 he appeared in an episode of Wire in the Blood, but his breakthrough arrived the following year when he was cast as Detective Sergeant Ray Carling in the cult BBC series Life on Mars. The character’s sharp wit and distinctive Yorkshire accent made him a fan favourite, leading to a continuation of the role in the spin‑off Ashes to Ashes until 2010. Andrews expanded his repertoire with guest spots on True Dare Kiss, The Street, and a memorable turn in Waterloo Road in 2010. The early 2010s saw him headline the BBC productions The Body Farm, United, and the supernatural drama Marchlands, while also narrating Currys television adverts. From 2012 to 2015 he contributed to Last Tango in Halifax, Being Eileen, and a notable episode of Midsomer Murders. In 2019 he joined the long‑running ITV soap Emmerdale as Will Taylor, remaining until his character’s on‑screen death in December 2024—a surprise to Andrews himself. Beyond acting he has narrated Channel 5’s Our Great Yorkshire Life and the behind‑the‑scenes series Casualty 24/7, showcasing his resonant voice and deep connection to his Yorkshire roots.
