David Hamilton

David Hamilton (23 April 1933 – 25 November 2016) was a controversial British photographer and film director whose dream‑like, soft‑focus imagery defined a distinct aesthetic in the latter half of the twentieth century. Born in London, he left school early and entered the world of advertising, where he quickly discovered a fascination with the interplay of light, shadow, and the human form. By the early 1960s Hamilton began publishing his own picture books, most notably The Age of Innocence and The Dreamers, which combined his signature pastel tones with evocative, often nude, depictions of adolescent subjects, sparking both acclaim and heated debate over artistic intent versus exploitation. His work transcended photography when he moved into cinema, directing erotic dramas such as Bilitis (1977) and Tendres Cousines (1980), films that echoed his photographic style by bathing scenes in a gentle, golden glow that softened contours and suggested nostalgia. Throughout his career Hamilton cultivated a reputation as a recluse, rarely granting interviews and allowing his images to speak for themselves, which added to the mystique surrounding his oeuvre.
