What's After the Movie
Danielle Ferland (born January 31, 1971) is an American actress and singer best known for originating the role of Little Red Ridinghood in Stephen Sondheim’s landmark musical Into the Woods. She began her professional career at the extraordinary age of thirteen when she made her Broadway debut as Louise in Sunday in the Park with George (1984), demonstrating a precocious talent that would define her early years on stage. After a brief off‑Broadway stint in Paradise! (1985) and a cameo as the singing child star in Woody Allen’s Radio Days (1987), Ferland returned to Broadway to create the iconic Little Red Ridinghood role in Into the Woods (1987), a performance that earned her a Theatre World Award in 1988 and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. Her work in the original production was later immortalized in three reunion performances filmed for PBS’s American Playhouse (1989). Beyond her early Broadway triumphs, Ferland built a diverse theatrical résumé that spans classical revivals, contemporary dramas, and regional productions. She appeared in The Crucible (1991) and portrayed Fredrika in the Lincoln Center revival of A Little Night Music (1991), later taking roles in Uncommon Women and Others (1994), Tartuffe at the Delacorte Theatre (1999), and A Year with Frog and Toad (2003). She also contributed to concert recordings such as the York Theatre’s Summer of ’42 (2006) and performed regularly in the Sondheim Unplugged series, which earned a Grammy nomination in 2024. In addition to acting, Ferland has directed, taught master classes at institutions like the Boston Children’s Theatre, and narrated audiobooks. Her screen credits include the HBO drama The Normal Heart (2014), the Netflix series Marvel’s Jessica Jones (2015), and a role in Lin‑Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021). Ferland continues to inspire new generations of performers through her ongoing work as a vocalist, educator, and advocate for musical theatre.
