What's After the Movie
Daisuke Ryu (born 14 January 1957, died 11 April 2021) was a Japanese actor of Korean descent whose career spanned over four decades, earning him a reputation as one of the most versatile performers in contemporary East Asian cinema. He first garnered widespread critical attention when he received the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award for Best New Actor for his powerful portrayal of the warlord Oda Nobunaga in Akira Kurosawa’s monumental Kagemusha (1980). This early accolade launched a prolific partnership with Kurosawa, leading to his memorable turn as Saburō Ichimonji in the epic Ran (1985), where his nuanced performance helped solidify the film’s status as a modern classic. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Ryu continued to demonstrate extraordinary range, embodying the legendary yamabushi Musashibō Benkei in Sōgo Ishii’s critically acclaimed Gojoe: Spirit War Chronicle (2000) and appearing as Count Kentaro Kurihama in the international television miniseries The Ginger Tree (1989). His body of work is marked by an ability to shift seamlessly between historical samurai roles, contemporary dramas, and international productions, earning him respect from directors and audiences alike. Bold and italic formatting highlight the artistic depth of his performances, while his dedication to his craft remained evident in every role he embraced. In March 2015, Ryu’s career faced a sudden setback when he traveled to Taiwan for a cameo in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. Upon arrival at Taoyuan International Airport, an incomplete entry form and his inebriated state led to a heated altercation with an immigration officer, resulting in a fractured leg for the officer and Ryu’s subsequent indictment and removal from the film. The incident sparked a brief period of legal trouble; however, Ryu publicly apologized in May and reconciled with the official, and in June a Taiwanese court imposed a fine that allowed him to return to Japan. Despite this controversy, he continued to work in Japanese cinema and television until his death in April 2021, leaving behind a legacy of powerful performances that continue to influence actors across generations.
