Constanze Engelbrecht

Constanze Engelbrecht (6 January 1950 – 21 July 2000) was a German actress who rose to become one of the most recognized faces on German television during the 1980s and early 1990s. Born in Munich to actress Alice Franz and sculptor Gen Golch, she entered the world of performance at a remarkably young age, providing the German voice for the character Jeff in the TV series Lassie for six years before making her on‑screen debut at ten in the TV movie Und nicht mehr Jessica (1965). Although her original ambition was to become a classical soprano, she studied music at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, the Salzburg Mozarteneum, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London before turning permanently to acting under the mentorship of Rosemarie Fendel. Engelbrecht’s theatrical career flourished on stages in Munich and even at Paris’s Théâtre de la Ville, where she earned acclaim for her versatility and emotional depth. Throughout the 1970s she became a staple of German television, appearing in iconic series such as Derrick, Der Alte (The Old Fox), and Tatort, and in 1979 she portrayed Gabrielle d’Estrées in the twelve‑part historical drama Heinrich, der gute König. In 1980 she moved to Paris with her husband, French writer‑director‑actor François Nocher, yet she continued to dominate German screens, starring in mini‑series like Unter der Trikolore (1980), the Feuchtwanger adaptation Exil (1981), and the lead role in Deep Water (1983). Her film work included The Train Killer (1983), What’s Up, Chancellor? (1984), and Fear of Falling (1984). Perhaps her most enduring television role was the scheming Brigitte Sanders in Diese Drombuschs (1987‑1990), a performance that cemented her status as a household name. The 1990s saw her in successful productions such as Die Frauen von Bonne Espérance, Eurocops, Ein Fall für zwei, and the acclaimed miniseries The Shadow Man (1996). Her final screen appearance was alongside Gérard Depardieu in a television adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo before she succumbed to breast cancer on 21 July 2000, after a battle that had spread to her liver and brain.
