What's After the Movie
Colin Trevorrow is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter best known for revitalizing the Jurassic World franchise and for his early work on the cult favorite Safety Not Guaranteed. Born on September 13, 1976 in San Francisco, California, he grew up in nearby Oakland where his father performed as a country‑rock musician and his mother worked as a photographer and day‑care operator, giving him a creative household that nurtured his artistic interests. As a child he sang in the chorus of the San Francisco Opera and later won youth film awards at the Mill Valley Film Festival and the San Francisco Youth Film Festival, early achievements that foreshadowed his future career. Trevorrow graduated from Piedmont High School before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film and dramatic writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1999, where he first met longtime writing partner Derek Connolly during an internship at Saturday Night Live. In 2002 he wrote and directed the internet‑sensational short Home Base, and his first feature documentary, Reality Show (2004), documented a failed reality TV production. The breakout moment arrived with Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), a quirky sci‑fi comedy that earned Sundance honors, an Independent Spirit nomination, and critical acclaim, establishing Trevorrow as a director capable of blending humor, heart, and genre thrills. This success led Universal to entrust him with Jurassic World (2015), which he co‑wrote and directed, grossing over $1.6 billion worldwide and cementing his status as a blockbuster filmmaker. He continued the series with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) as co‑writer and executive producer, and returned to helm Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Although his tenure on Star Wars: Episode IX ended in 2017, he retained story credit on the final film. In 2019 Trevorrow founded Metronome Film Co., a trans‑Atlantic production company, and has since produced and directed projects ranging from The Book of Henry to upcoming thrillers such as an Area 51 mystery. He lives in the United Kingdom with his wife, Isabelle Trevorrow, and their two children.
