Clive Swift

Clive Walter Swift (9 February 1936 – 1 February 2019) was an English actor and songwriter renowned for his versatile stage and screen work. Born in Liverpool to Abram Sampson Swift, a furniture‑shop owner, and Lily Rebecca Greenman, Swift grew up in a Jewish family and was educated at Clifton College before studying English literature at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. After university he trained as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, but his true passion lay in performance, leading him to join the Royal Shakespeare Company where he appeared as Snug in the 1968 film version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he built a robust television résumé, most memorably portraying the long‑suffering husband Richard Bucket in the beloved BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, a role that made his dead‑pan delivery a household staple across the United Kingdom and beyond. His career also included guest spots on Doctor Who (both the 1985 serial Revelation of the Daleks and the 2007 Christmas special), a supporting turn as Sir Ector in John Boorman’s epic Excalibur, and later appearances in series such as Born and Bred and Midsomer Murders, the latter marking his final on‑screen performance in 2017. Beyond acting, Swift cultivated a parallel career as a songwriter, penning witty, observational pieces that he showcased in touring shows like Richard Bucket Overflows: An Audience with Clive Swift (2007) and Clive Swift Entertains (2009), where he performed his own lyrics and melodies to appreciative audiences. He married novelist Margaret Drabble in 1960, a partnership that produced three children: daughter Rebecca Swift, founder of The Literary Consultancy, and sons Adam Swift, a noted academic, and Joe Swift, a garden designer and television presenter. Although the marriage ended in divorce in 1975, Swift remained close to his children, who continued his artistic legacy after his death. He retired from acting after his 2017 Midsomer Murders episode, and passed away at his London home on 1 February 2019, just days shy of his 83rd birthday, after a brief illness. Colleagues such as James Dreyfus and Patricia Routledge praised his subtlety, inventiveness, and the depth he brought to both comedic and dramatic roles, cementing his reputation as a distinguished figure in British entertainment.
