Clara Calamai

Clara Calamai (1909‑09‑07 – 1998‑09‑21) was a pioneering Italian actress whose career spanned the turbulent years of pre‑war cinema to the resurgence of genre filmmaking in the 1970s. Born in the Tuscan city of Prato, she entered the film world with a supporting role in Aldo Vergano’s war drama Pietro Micca (1938), quickly establishing herself as a versatile talent capable of both dramatic intensity and seductive allure. Her breakthrough came in Alessandro Blasetti’s The Jester’s Supper (1942), where she performed what is widely regarded as the first topless scene in an Italian sound film, a moment she later described as reluctantly accepted under the promise of a closed set. The boldness of that performance foreshadowed her most celebrated role as the tragic heroine Giovanna Bragana in Luchino Visconti’s noir classic Ossessione (1943), a film that cemented her reputation as one of the leading figures of Italian neorealism. In 1946 she received the Nastro d’Argento for best actress for The Adulteress, confirming her critical acclaim and popularity at a time when Italian cinema was reshaping its identity. After a period of relative inactivity, Calamai resurfaced in Dario Argento’s cult horror masterpiece Profondo Rosso (1975), delivering a memorable performance as the eccentric matriarch Marta, proving her enduring screen presence. Beyond her film work, she married explorer Count Leonardo Bonzi in 1945, with whom she had two daughters before the marriage was annulled in 1959; she later shared her life with Captain Valerio Andreoni. Calamai died in Rimini in 1998 and was buried in the Monumental Cemetery, where a commemorative stele was unveiled in 2022, honoring her lasting impact on Italian cinematic history.
