Cinqué Lee

Cinqué Lee (born July 4, 1966) in Brooklyn, New York is an American actor and filmmaker whose career has been shaped by a lineage of cultural creators. He is the son of acclaimed jazz composer Bill Lee and the younger brother of visionary director Spike Lee, with siblings David Lee, Joie Lee, and cousin Malcolm D. Lee also active in the entertainment industry. Growing up in a household where music, politics, and film intersected, Cinqué absorbed a deep appreciation for storytelling and visual expression. His early exposure to his brother’s film sets sparked a fascination with the technical aspects of cinema, leading him to experiment with camera work, editing, and archival preservation while still in his teens. This familial immersion provided a unique apprenticeship that allowed him to develop a multifaceted skill set before he officially entered the industry. In the late 1980s, Cinqué began appearing on screen, taking small but memorable roles in Spike Lee’s School Daze (1988) and later in Jim Jarmusch’s cult classic Mystery Train (1989). He expanded his portfolio by contributing as a co‑screenwriter on Crooklyn (1994), showcasing his narrative talent. Over the years he appeared in Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) and the 2013 remake of Oldboy, illustrating his versatility across genres. Parallel to his acting, Cinqué cultivated an independent filmmaking voice, directing short and experimental works such as Window on Your Present (1988), Nowhere Fast (1997), Sink Like a Stone (2000), UR4 Given (2004), and co‑directing Burn Out the Day (2010) with Sean Bohary.
