Charlie Rose

Charles Peete Rose Jr., known professionally as Charlie Rose, is an American journalist and talk‑show host whose career spanned more than four decades. Born on January 5, 1942 in Henderson, North Carolina, he grew up above his parents' country store and excelled as a basketball star before attending Duke University, where he earned a B.A. in history in 1964 and a J.D. in 1968. After a brief stint in banking, Rose entered broadcasting in 1972 as a weekend reporter for WPIX‑TV and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming managing editor for Bill Moyers' International Report and later executive producer of Bill Moyers Journal, where his interview with Jimmy Carter earned a Peabody Award in 1976. Throughout the 1980s he anchored CBS News Nightwatch, winning an Emmy for his interview with Charles Manson, and hosted a short‑lived Fox syndicated program before launching The Charlie Rose Show on PBS in 1991, a program celebrated for its intellectual tone and in‑depth conversations with presidents, filmmakers, comedians, and scientists. The show moved to Bloomberg in 1994 and ran until 2017, producing over a thousand interviews that included Barack Obama, Martin Scorsese, George Carlin, and Noam Chomsky. In addition to his PBS work, Rose served as a correspondent for 60 Minutes II and later 60 Minutes, co‑anchored CBS This Morning from 2012 to 2017, and revived the classic “Person to Person” series with Lara Logan. His career was abruptly halted in November 2017 when multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, leading to his dismissal from PBS, Bloomberg, and CBS and the revocation of numerous honors; Rose acknowledged “insensitive” behavior but denied intent. After a period of relative silence, he returned to digital interviewing in 2022 with “Charlie Rose Conversations,” featuring figures such as Warren Buffett and Isabella Rossellini, and in November 2024 a lawsuit related to the 2017 allegations was settled with plaintiffs acknowledging no ill intent. Rose’s legacy remains a complex mix of pioneering interview journalism and controversial personal conduct.
