Charles Macaulay

Charles Macaulay was an American actor and director whose career spanned both the stage and screen during the mid‑twentieth century. Born on September 26, 1927, in Kentucky he pursued formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where his performance in The Heiress earned him the First Judges Medal and commendations from legendary thespians John Gielgud and John Mills. After graduating, he made his New York debut in 1952 with The Sacred Flame by W. Somerset Maugham, quickly establishing himself in the vibrant off‑Broadway and Broadway scenes with six off‑Broadway and seven Broadway productions, as well as a stint at the Barter Theatre opposite Judith Anderson. His versatility shone on television, where he appeared in live anthology series such as Armstrong Circle Theatre and Studio One, and later took on memorable roles in classic series including the original run of Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Gunsmoke, Airport 77, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Columbo. Macaulay also became a familiar face in the Perry Mason TV film series, initially portraying a judge before assuming the role of District Attorney Markham, and he maintained a close personal friendship with star Raymond Burr, eventually administering Burr’s estate. On the stage, Macaulay demonstrated a deep affinity for both contemporary and classical works, starring in productions such as Man and Superman, The Winslow Boy, Bell, Book and Candle, and The Dark Is Light Enough. His Shakespearean talent was evident in his performances as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and as the titular Macbeth at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. Later in his career, he shared his expertise with a new generation of performers, teaching at the USC School of Theatre from 1986 to 1992 and directing six student productions. He passed away from cancer on August 13, 1999, in Sonoma County, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the dramatic arts.
