What's After the Movie
Charles Frick was a Baltimore‑born physician whose career spanned the turbulent mid‑nineteenth century, a period marked by rapid advances in medical science and the growing professionalization of health care. Born on 8 August 1823 in Baltimore, Maryland, Frick initially pursued studies at Baltimore College and trained as a civil engineer before turning his attention to medicine in 1843. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1845, quickly distinguishing himself through a keen interest in auscultation—a technique newly introduced to the city by his brother‑in‑law. In 1847, Frick co‑founded the Maryland Medical Institute, a pioneering preparatory school of medicine, where he headed the department of practical medicine, shaping the education of future physicians. From 1849 to 1856 he served as the attending physician at the Maryland Penitentiary, confronting the unique health challenges of the incarcerated population, and he became an active member of the Baltimore Pathological Society in 1855‑56, contributing to the early development of pathological research in the region. His expertise earned him a chair in materia medica at the Maryland College of Pharmacy in 1856, an institution he helped organize, and after an extended European tour he returned to assume the professorship of materia medica and therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1858, simultaneously overseeing the medical department of the Baltimore Infirmary as a visiting physician.
