What's After the Movie

Caterina Boratto

Caterina Boratto (15 March 1915 – 14 September 2010) was a renowned Italian actress and singer whose career spanned the golden age of Italian cinema and extended well into the television era. Born in Turin, Kingdom of Italy, she pursued vocal training at the local Musical Lyceum with the ambition of becoming a professional singer, a path that soon intersected with film when director Guido Brignone cast her in her debut feature, To Live, alongside tenor Tito Schipa. The movie’s success catapulted her into stardom within the popular Telefoni Bianchi genre, and she even secured a seven‑year contract with Hollywood studio Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer—an arrangement that was ultimately cut short by the outbreak of World War II. During the war, Boratto endured personal tragedy, losing both of her brothers—Renato, a partisan, and Filiberto, a soldier—when the Acqui Division was massacred in 1943, an event that profoundly affected her outlook. In 1944 she married doctor Armando Ceratto, and the couple welcomed two children, Marina and Paolo, marking a brief retreat from the limelight as she focused on family life. After a near‑two‑decade hiatus, Boratto returned to cinema with iconic roles in Federico Fellini’s and Juliet of the Spirits, performances that showcased her enduring talent and cemented her status as a versatile character actress. From the late 1960s onward she maintained a steady presence on screen, appearing in numerous films and becoming a familiar face on Italian television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, thereby influencing multiple generations of audiences.
