Carolyn Carlson is an American‑born French choreographer, celebrated for her innovative blend of contemporary dance and poetic expression. Born on February 6, 1943, in Madison, Wisconsin, she began studying modern dance at an early age, quickly demonstrating a natural talent that led her to the Juilliard School and later to the prestigious Martha Graham Company. In the late 1960s she moved to France, where her career truly flourished, and she soon became a central figure in the European dance scene, establishing her own company, Le Ballet de la Ville de Marseille, in 1976. Over the following decades Carlson created a rich repertoire of works—such as “Petite Mort”, “Fête des Mères”, and “Rituel”—that are noted for their ethereal atmosphere, meticulous attention to gesture, and seamless integration of spoken word and music. Her choreographic style often explores themes of memory, the passage of time, and the human body’s relationship to space, earning her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the prestigious Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.
